The cows come back to Wanstead
Saturday 7 September - 11:00 am - 3:00 pm
Newcomers to Wanstead always wonder why there are cattle grids on Green Man Roundabout. Those who are in the know – or who lived here in the years before Foot and Mouth – will nod sagely and explain that cows used to roam pretty much freely across Wanstead. They would graze opposite Whipps Cross, wander onto Wanstead Flats and make their way around Wanstead helping themselves to people’s front gardens. The controls on cattle introduced at the start of the century put an end to it. But artist and author Karen Humpage is seeking to put it right. At 2pm today at the Larder she will be launching a book about the days of the cows. And before that, she will be doing a walkabout around Wanstead, with a giant model cow. On wheels. People can stop and take a selfie with the cow (and will be invited to make a donation to Compassion in World Farming). If there is a more original way to launch both Wanstead Fringe week and the fortnight of the Wanstead Art Trail, we have yet to hear it.
